Sarah Cummings was fine. Faith had insisted on coming up after driving her home. She’d made Sarah a tuna fish sandwich and watched her eat it. Sarah had shown her more photographs of Tess, and Faith had told Sarah the police would probably be asking for them if they didn’t turn up a portfolio on file at one of the modeling agencies. “You never shot her in color?” she’d asked, and Sarah said aside from some snapshots that a friend had taken at a surprise birthday party he’d given for Sarah, she didn’t have any color pictures of Tess. The friend had e-mailed them to her and she’d pointed to the one that they’d stuck on the fridge. She and Tess were wearing those little cone-shaped kid’s birthday hats. Tess’s had slipped forward and looked like a unicorn’s horn. They were both laughing. Faith asked her if she could print out a copy for her and she had. She’d asked Sarah what they had done for Tess’s birthday, and Sarah had admitted that they hadn’t done anything, that when she’d asked Tess, that night particularly, when her birthday was, she’d always said the same thing, “Never.”
It was a relief to be alone. Not that she wasn’t grateful to Faith, but the last minutes before she’d left, Sarah had felt so tired she wasn’t sure she could stand up to let her out. But she was fine. All she needed was a nap.
She went into her bedroom, pulled back the covers, and just before she slid between the sheets, she went over to her dresser and took Tess’s scarf out. It still smelled like her perfume. A blend she had had made up just for her, she’d told Sarah. It was subtle, but unmistakable—woodsy, spicy, but with an underlying floral scent like jasmine. Tess said it was a chypre—French for the island of Cyprus—parfum.
Sarah spread the scarf over her pillow, got into bed, rested her cheek against the silk, and almost instantly fell into a deep sleep.
